Why resize JPG images?

JPEG is the world's most widely-used image format — nearly every photo taken on a smartphone or digital camera is saved as a JPG. The problem is that camera JPGs are enormous: 4000×3000 pixels at 8–12 MB is common. Web pages, emails, and social media platforms don't need images anywhere near that size.

Resizing a JPG to match its actual display size is one of the highest-impact optimisations you can make. Google PageSpeed Insights explicitly flags “properly size images” as a performance issue. A 1200px image on a site that never displays wider than 1200px loads 10–20× faster than the raw 4000px original.

JPG quality and file size

The quality slider controls how aggressively the JPEG encoder discards colour information the eye can't easily detect. Here's a practical guide:

  • 95–100%Near-original. Use for archival, print, or further editing. Files are large.
  • 85–90%Sweet spot for most web use. Visually identical to original, 40–60% smaller.
  • 70–80%Slightly visible artifacts on close inspection. Good for thumbnails and social.
  • Below 70%Artifacts are visible. Only use where file size is critical (e.g. SMS thumbnails).
