Why most QR code generators require login — and why this one does not

Most QR code tools — QR Tiger, QRCode Monkey, Beaconstac, Canva — gate the download behind a sign-up form. Some add a watermark on free downloads. Some let you generate for free but charge monthly to keep the QR code "active."

That model exists because their QR codes are dynamic — the code redirects through their server, so they host your destination and need an account to manage it. Cancel your subscription and the QR code breaks.

Will your QR code stop working? No — here is why

Paid QR code services often warn you that dynamic QR codes "require an active subscription." Cancel and the code shows an error page. This is by design — it is how they retain customers.

Static QR codes have no such dependency. The destination is baked into the pattern itself. When someone scans your QR code, their phone reads the pattern and acts on it directly — it never contacts this website or any third party. Your QR code will work in five years the same as it does today, as long as the URL or content it encodes is still valid.

The only reason to choose a dynamic QR code is if you need to change the destination after printing — for example, a product batch where the URL is not finalized before the packaging goes to print. For every other use case, static is simpler, more private, and free.

How QR codes work

A QR code is a two-dimensional matrix barcode standardized as ISO 18004. Data is encoded in a grid of black and white modules. The three large corner squares are finder patterns that let a camera detect orientation regardless of angle. The rest encodes the actual data plus error correction bits.
