Why convert HEIC to PNG?
PNG is lossless — every pixel is stored exactly as captured with zero compression artifacts. It's the right choice for screenshots, UI mockups, images with text, or anything you plan to edit further. Converting HEIC to PNG also makes your files universally accessible to apps that don't support HEIC.

PNG vs JPG — which to choose
PNG files are larger but pixel-perfect. JPG files are smaller but use lossy compression that introduces subtle artifacts. The right choice depends on what you're doing with the file:
- →Use PNG for screenshots, UI graphics, images with text, or anything you'll edit further
- →Use PNG when you need to overlay the image on a different background
- →Use JPG for standard iPhone photos you're sharing via email, messaging, or social media
- →Use JPG when file size matters — PNG can be 3–5× larger than JPG for the same photo
For typical iPhone photos, HEIC to JPG is usually the better choice. Use PNG when you need the exact original pixels with zero compression loss.
Why HEIC files can't be opened on Windows or Android
Apple adopted HEIC as the default iPhone photo format in iOS 11 (2017) because it halves storage usage compared to JPG. The problem is that Windows and Android don't include HEVC decoders by default — HEVC licensing fees make it expensive to bundle. Windows 10 and 11 can open HEIC only if you install the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store (a paid add-on). Android supports HEIC from Android 13 onward, but older devices can't open them at all.
Converting to PNG or JPG gives you a format that every operating system, photo app, and website can display without any special software.
